Borrow Mourn Tragic 'Gentleman' Holgate

Barrow are in mourning for their popular former goalkeeping coach Mick Holgate.

The club and players have paid tribute to the former Macclesfield stopper after he lost his battle with cancer.

“He was a true gentleman, he always had wise words of advice for players, staff and supporters alike and will be missed by all at the club,” Barrow said.

“Mick was a football man through and through and will be missed by those at all of his former clubs as well.

“He was goalkeeping coach with the Bluebirds until he left last summer to battle cancer, keeping in touch with many at the club during that time and continuing to offer his wisdom and humour to those who needed it.

“The thoughts of all at Barrow AFC are with his family and friends at this time, and arrangements are being made to pay tribute to Mick on Saturday when we host Bromley.”

Former striker Grant Holt said everyone will miss a “fantastic man , a true gentleman and brilliant coach”.

Ex-Bluebirds striker Ross Hannah tweeted: “Very sad news about Mick Holgate, helped me at @BarrowAFC with his wise words even though he probably never knew that. A true gent, genuine and a pleasure to be around always had a smile on his face. Life’s very cruel at times.”
