The former Tranmere Rovers striker picked up the problem three games ago and is now set to be out for up to four months, writes Tom Feaheny.
Almond picked up the problem after coming on as a substitute in the loss against Tamworth at the end of October.
"Unfortunately, it looks like he's going to be out for three to four months which is a blow for Louis and for us," confirmed York's club physio Ian Gallagher to their website.
"He has done it previously when he was younger and he has, basically, undone that operation. It's more serious than we thought."
Almond who was at Southport at the end of last season has scored twice so far for the National League North.
