Bernard Is Burning Bright As Shots Look For Top Spot

The National League could have new leaders tonight, and Aldershot’s Bernard Mensah knows the rewards of a fourth straight victory at Bromley.

There was undoubtedly frustration when a power outage put paid to last Tuesday’s match at Hayes Lane.

But anyone who watched either side last weekend will see the power of some well-rest legs.

Having beaten leaders Wrexham 2-0, the Shots get a stab at taking control of the division this evening.

Three points will mean they overtake leaders Sutton United and after scoring at the weekend, Mensah spoke to us about how he feels to be fully fit - and refreshed.

“We were meant to play Bromley last Tuesday of course but what that did was give us the chance to rest up,” the attacker said,

“Against Wrexham we really had the legs, and they - having played 90 a few days before - didn’t get that opportunity.

“Saturday was a big test for us. They were top of the league and now we’ve won three on the bounce and we’re starting to see the us of the back end of last season where we lost one in 23 games.”

Mensah knows people are now starting to sit up and take notice of Aldershot Town again.

“We’re starting to pick up the points that we should do, and hopefully Tuesday night we go again and go top if we win that,” said the 23-year-old. “We would be closer to where we want to be with a win.

“We’re starting to lay our marker down for the rest of the season and he gaffer was right, Saturday was the best performance we’ve had so far.”

On his own good form, Mensah said: “Ask the top players - if they score one, they want to have scored two. If they score two they would be frustrated not to get three. I guess I’m like that.

“I was injured for two-and-a-half months before the start of the season and I had to come back slowly, but now I’m picking up and getting back to where I was at the end of league season.

“I think personally every game I’m seeing an improvement in my performance. But without the team around me I don’t perform at all and we have nine or ten playing well every week at the moment.

“At the beginning of the season we had loads of injuries but we now have a strong starting side and a really strong bench - that’s such a positive sign.”
