For the magority of his 14 years at Hendon he was battling to earn promotion into it. Despite a number of very near misses, he never quite got over that line.
So far, the London cabbie is making up for lost time.
That’s not to say his reign at Hampton got off to a good start. A summer which saw nearly every single one of the club’s play-off finalists depart, one point from nine wasn’t the opening he would have liked in the league he aspired to test himself in.
Since then, his side have been in relentless winning form. Five in a row, and six from seven, has them joint second going into the weekend.
The two clubs sitting just behind the leaders Woking go head-to-head on Saturday. It’s the big game he badly wanted and Billericay’s visit gives the Beavers another chance to shine.
“It has been great being a part of the league so far, I have enjoyed every minute,” McCann said.
“I have had to come in and earn my stripes. We rebuilt the squad and had to try again. There was a lot of not knowing about the whole thing, but there was an excitement which came with that.
“But it’s been great. The players have been fantastic. We had to get a totally new group together and quickly. The dressing room bonded very soon.
“We didn’t know what to expect but we like what we see so far. There’s a lot more to come from the side.
“Now we’ll see where we can take it. Saturday can’t come soon enough.”
