The Silkmen fell short of a National League playoff place last time out and the club are determined to go one better next season.
Talented playmaker Durrell, 27, left Chester at the end of last season which was seen as a surprise after a number of positive performances.
Askey is taking a look at him and hasn’t ruled out a deal.
“We've got Koby Arthur and Elliott Durrell training with us at the minute and they are looking really good,” the manager said.
“So far training has gone really well and we’ve not picked up any injuries.”
But Askey has a decision to make about his skipper and says he is keeping an open mind.
"We haven't decided on the captaincy yet. You want eleven captain's really. It's a team game," Askey said.
