Arsenal Legend Akers On Board To Inspire The Wood

Luke Garrard has added a big name to his management team in the form of Vic Akers.

Akers arrives at the Wood after years of service at Arsenal - where he set-up and managed their ladies team for 22-years.

The 72-year-old is no stranger to Meadow Park having lifted the UEFA Women's Cup with the Gunners in 2007 - just one of his 32 honours.

He's also worked with the Arsenal community foundation and been kitman to the senior squad.

Speaking of his appointment, Akers said he was looking forward to helping Garrard out.

“I regard Luke as one of the best young managers around," he told the club's website.

"Certainly, in non-league football he is probably up there with the best. It is unusual that they should be in this position now, because we are down in the bottom ten and only three or four points away from actually being in danger.

“We have got 12 games to go and they are going to be 12 cup finals for us.

“It is certainly a nice challenge to come back into the game and use my experience for Luke, because obviously there are one or two things that I see that he maybe doesn’t, because he is so involved."
