Hartlepool United’s Lennie Lawrence saw for himself the strength of York City last weekend and feels the Minstermen are the one they’ve all got to stop.
Adam Hinshelwood’s team lead the way with Forest Green Rovers just a point behind the table toppers.
His prediction will only add fuel to the fire ahead of Saturday’s huge live DAZN game between the top two.
Experienced Lawrence last week took over at Pools alongside Anthony Limbrick but he has been in the game long enough to know a good side when he sees one.
“You can’t take too much out of this, because they are on their way,” Lawrence, 76, told BBC Radio Tees following York’s 5-3 victory over his team on Saturday.
“They’re going to win this league, I’m pretty sure. You never know, but it does seem like they are favourites at this particular time. Any lessons you learn have got to be heeded with that in mind.
“You’re dealing with a top team, you’re not dealing with a run of the mill National League team.”
His comments come after Woking manager Michael Doyle said York are the best side in the division while Barnet boss Dean Brennan went on the record in September saying anyone who finishes above Forest Green Rovers will be champions.
The top two collide in a huge game this weekend, a match given enhanced coverage by broadcast partner DAZN.
Lawrence went on: “Are we short of the standard that York have set? Yes, of course we are.
“We’ll probably continue to be for the rest of the season, but our job is to get wins against routine National League teams and climb the league.
“The players kept going, there was no shame or disgrace in it, we were just beaten by the better team on the day. It owed a lot to the quality of the players that we were playing against.”
