Birmingham-born Whing enjoyed a stellar career of almost 400 senior appearances as a player for the U’s, Coventry City, Brighton & Hove Albion and others.
He’s spent the last two years as part of the coaching set-up at League One Oxford as co-manager of their youth team.
Now, however, the 32-year-old has moved to take up the post of head coach of Harriers` under-23 set-up that sees a squad of players combining higher education with full-time training and a programme of friendly matches.
Already this season the squad have met the likes of Walsall, Peterborough United and Barnet as the programme continues to develop.
“I’ve known Andy for a number of years and this is a bit of a coup for us, make no mistake,” chairman Colin Gordon said of the new arrival. “He’s been coaching at a great club and a great level and he’s eager to take on the challenge here and really make the under-23s project his own.
“It’s vital that all of our teams interconnect and work well together – we’ve seen that already with the likes of our under-18s and under-19s, but we really need the under-23s to lead the way in that respect”.
