The Saints manager watched his side go joint top of the division after a professional 2-0 win over Bath City at a packed Clarence Park.
But even when Charlie Walker doubled their lead after half-time, the manager’s mind returned to previous home games where St Albans have come a cropper having held a healthy advantage.
On Non-League Day over 1,500 turned up - and while at times the football was good to watch Allinson praised his players for being dull when it mattered!
“It was really pleasing,” said the City boss. “We didn’t look like letting it slip. We have had Cambridge City, Eastbourne, Gloucester and even Bridport here and we’ve looked in a strong position and then let them back into the game so it’s always in your thoughts.
“We spoke about it at length, but the players remained really professional. We’ve got these young lads who want to score goals and excite people but sometimes you have got to be a bit boring.
“At times against Bath we maybe were a bit boring, but that’s fine. We won a difficult game against a good side with a new manager so it’s a really good three points.
“We don’t need to overstretch ourselves, but we didn’t put ourselves into the same position as we have done before and that’s great. We’ve got a lot of tough games coming up so it was important we got that win and that we kept a clean sheet.”
Allinson, whose side face Boreham Wood in the FA Cup next weekend, added: “They’re a young group and they like to play the role of entertainers which you understand but you also need to know how to close games out and we did that.
"They're a good little group, we're loving working with them, and they're starting to mature."
