All You Need To Know Ahead Of The FA Cup First Round

By Sam Elliott

FA Cup first round weekend is where heroes can be found and legends are made - with one huge headline already written.

After Tamworth's incredible display on Friday night, Saturday sees plenty of brilliant matches and here are some of the stand out ties.

Barnet manager Dean Brennan thinks his side could be ready to step up to the Football League in the months ahead and they can prove that point when they travel to Exeter City.

In fine fettle in the National League North right now are Curzon Ashton. They’ve got their work cut out against in-form Mansfield Town, sitting in fourth place in League One.

It will be an emotional afternoon for Micky Mellon as he takes Oldham Athletic to his old club Tranmere Rovers - but the League Two side are struggling, and the Latics don’t lose often.

Giant killers of recent years are raring to go once more.

Aldershot Town made headlines with their 7-4 thrashing of Swindon Town at this stage last season - Tommy Widdrington's side would take that scoreline again at Bradford City.

Boreham Wood are on the march again and their fans hope Leyton Orient can be added to their list of famous casualties.

LondonersSutton United have taken on bigger boys than Birmingham City in the FA Cup but it will be a huge upset on Sunday if they can pull this one off after the Blues mega money investment.

Maidstone United know what this competition can do - can they keep their latest run going at Solihull Moors?

The only other all-National League tie of the round sees Braintree Town make the trip up from Essex to face off with Brackley Town.

Burton Albion lie in wait for Scarborough Athletic while National League table toppers York City make the trip to Wycombe Wanderers, themselves going great guns in League One.

National League South side Worthing think Morecambe’s League Two struggles give them a real opportunity and the same could be said of Rushall Olympic - they welcome Accrington Stanley.

Wealdstone travel to Grimsby Town, who aren’t strong at home. Forest Green Rovers also go north with a shock at Stockport County on their agenda.

Dagenham & Redbridge are at Crewe Alexandra, while Weston-super-Mare have sold out the away end at Bristol Rovers with the Seagulls flying in the National League South.

Bromley want to show Rochdale their improvement since joining the EFL, as Woking fancy their chances of another run but Cambridge United don’t want to be on the end of another Cards upset.

Tonbridge Angels know they will be the favourites to defeat Harborough Town - a win means they are then 90 minutes from potentially playing a Premier League club.

Southend United welcome former Premier League side Charlton Athletic to Roots Hall while Maidenhead United host Crawley Town - the Magpies looking to reach the second round for the first time in their history.

The last tie of the round sees an old National League FA Cup hero face a newcomer as Chesham United look to make new headlines against Lincoln City.

The Imps reached the fifth round back in 2017 as a National League side - Chesham are having their best run in almost a decade. That tie is live on ITV 4.

Winning clubs will earn £45,000 with the sides defeated also handed £15,000 from the FA’s increased prize pot.

The draw for the second round takes place on Sunday night.
