All The Action! Round Up: Vanarama National League

By Steve Whitney

Sutton United lead the fledgling Vanarama National League table after securing a last-gasp 3-2 win at the Swansway Chester Stadium on Saturday.

In a thrilling encounter, goals from Louis John after just 4 minutes and Tommy Wright after 43 minutes seemed to have put Paul Doswell’s side in command, but Craig Mahon’s terrific strike in first half injury-time gave the hosts hope.

Five minutes after the break, Nicky Bailey netted a long-range free-kick for Sutton, only for the referee to rule it out for an offside after consulting with his assistant.

Chester battled hard and grabbed an equaliser through Lucas Dawson’s 25-yard effort in the 63rd minute.

But just as it looked as though they were heading for a point, the hosts were undone in stoppage time when sub Kieron Cadogan chipped over Conor Mitchell to seal victory for the U`s.

Bromley are second and still unbeaten after beating relegated Hartlepool United 2-0 at Hayes Lane.

A goal in each half was enough to condemn Pools to defeat on their first-ever visit to Bromley as they struggle to acclimatise to life in the National League.

The home side took a 36th minute lead when Josh Rees prodded home his third goal of the season to date.

And just before the hour-mark, Pools fell further behind when, after Scott Loach had done well to parry an initial effort from Adam Mekki, he was powerless to stop a fierce volley from Luke Wanadio on the follow-up.

Dagenham & Redbridge extended their unbeaten start to the season with a hard-earned late 2-2 draw at Mill Farm against newly-promoted AFC Fylde.

The Daggers fell behind after 14 minutes when Andy Bond picked out Henry Jones with his cross and the striker did well to control the ball and beat Mark Cousins.

But the visitors were back on level terms in first half injury-time as Morgan Ferrier found himself in space to slot home.

John Still’s men looked set to be returning from the north west empty-handed when Simon Grand headed the home side in front with only 4 minutes to go.

But defender Sam Ling converted from a corner in the 4th minute of stoppage time to ensure honours finished even.

Aldershot Town suffered their first defeat of the 2017/18 campaign at Meadow Park against a Boreham Wood side achieving their third win in five games.

The Shots were disappointing in the opening period.

The fell behind after 26 minutes when a quick free-kick found Bruno Andrade in acres of space and he shot past Jake Cole from an acute angle.

And on 39 minutes, Wood doubled their advantage when an Andrade free-kick hits the wall, deflects off Shaun Jeffers and ricochets past the wrong-footed Cole.

Right near the break, Aldershot`s best chance arrived when Will de Havilland`s header hit the bar.

An obviously angry Gary Waddock sent his players back out for the second half very early, and it paid dividends 6 minutes in when they reduced the deficit with a 25-yard screamer into the top corner from Cheye Alexander.

But they weren`t able to find a leveller and Wood held firm for three good points.

Gateshead also made it three wins from five games after a compfortable 3-0 victory over Macclesfield Town at the International Stadium.

The home side took the lead after just 5 minutes when Fraser Kerr poked in Richard Peniket's cross at the far post.

Scott Wilson came close to equalising for the Silkmen with a 25-yard effort which James Montgomery saved well.

But then in first half injury-time, the Heed doubled their advantage when Jordan Burrow headed in Kerr`s corner.

And they confirmed victory 18 minutes from time when Jordan Preston slotted past Billy O'Brien to make it 3-0.

Leyton Orient secured their third win of the season against Woking at Kingfield.

Striker Macauley Bonne came back to haunt one of his former teams this as his second half brace secured victory for the O’s.

Despite the sides going into the break goalless, Orient made the breakthrough 5 minutes after the restart when Bonne stroked home from a Jake Caprice cross, before the forward sealed the victory 4 minutes from time.

Pre-season promotion favourites Tranmere Rovers have still only managed one win so far this new campaign after suffering a second defeat, this time at the Silverlake Stadium against Eastleigh.

Following a goalless first half, Ben Williamson fired the Spitfires in front after 64 minutes with his 4th goal of the season already.

And then 11 minutes from time, experienced striker Craig McAllister – on as a half-time substitute - doubled the home side`s advantage with a powerful header which went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Maidstone United recorded their first three-point haul at the fifth attempt by beating nine-man Wrexham 2-1 at the Gallagher Stadium.

Wrexham took the lead through new boy Alex Reid, who made it two in two games for his new club after 10 minutes, but the hosts turned the game around, thanks to goals from Alex Wynter 5 minutes later and then Jack Richards after 33 minutes to lead at the break.

The second half got worse for Wrexham, who saw Manny Smith sent-off for a professional foul after 68 minutes.

That led to a penalty which was saved by Christian Dibble, before Mark Carrington also saw red for dissent 3 minutes later.

Guiseley AFC recorded their first win of the new season against managerless Torquay United.

The Lions edged a 3-2 victory at Nethermoor to leave the Gulls at the foot of the table.

But the visitors found themselves 2-1 up at the break, despite falling behind after 14 minutes when Alex Purver headed onto the bar from a corner, only for Danny Lowe to head past Ryan Clarke from the rebound.

Torquay equalised in the 35th minute when a Luke Young corner found Sean McGinty, who finished with a powerful header.

Just 2 minutes later, Jamie Reid put Ruairi Keating in to finish past Joe Green to make it 2-1.

And the visitors held that lead until the 88th minute when they were caught napping and the ball broke nicely for sub Kevan Hurst to score.

And then in stoppage time, after an almighty scramble in the box, Guiseley won it with a goal that in the end was credited as a Keating own goal.

It`s looking like being a long, hard season for Liam McDonald`s Solihull Moors side as they were beaten for the third time in four games, this time at the Automated Technology Group Stadium against an FC Halifax Town side for whom this was a first win since winning promotion via the play-offs.

Former Curzon Ashton striker Adam Morgan marked his first start of the season by scoring the winner for the Shaymen.

It was another game of two halves from Halifax, who deservedly led at half-time before Solihull came out fighting after the interval and should have cancelled out Morgan`s 28th minute opener, but Sam Johnson saved Oladapo Afolayan’s penalty.

Solihull spurned some good chances in the second period, but held on to earn their first three-point haul.

Newly-promoted Ebbsfleet United joined Bromley and Dagenham & Redbridge as the only other side yet to taste defeat in 2017/18.

However, Darryl McMahon`s side have only won one of their five games after sharing the spoils with the team they came up with, Maidenhead United.

A looping Harry Pritchard effort gave the Magpies a 27th minute lead at York Road.

But Fleet battled back with a well-taken Luke Coulson effort 5 minutes into the second half.

Dover Athletic and Barrow AFC shared a 1-1 draw at Crabble.

The Bluebirds long trip south saw them compete well in a goalless first half.

And then 8 minutes into the second period, Jordan White put the visitors in front.

And Paul Cox`s side had several opportunities to have put the game to bed.

And in the end were made to pay when Ryan Bird pulled the Whites back on level terms with 18 minutes remaining.
