It was a mixed night for National League teams in the FA Trophy as Tuesday’s first round matches took centre stage.

A number of our clubs took their leave but many fight on after confirming their second round place.

One upset arrived at Chorley, where the National League Magpies fell victims to Matlock Town after a resilient display from the Northern Premier League club. It ended 2-2 but the Gladiators won it on penalty kicks - there is to be no run this year for Jamie Vermiglio’s team.

There was also a surprise at Halesowen, who sent Bradford (Park Avenue) packing, running out 2-0 winners.

Altrincham fancied making an impression but that must wait for another year.

The Robins bowed out to National League North foes Farsley Celtic, Nathan Cartman the star of the show in their 2-1 success.

Barrow needed to twice come from behind to draw 2-2 with Atherton Colleries, Morgan Penfold answering the SOS and the game will be decided in a replay.

Dagenham go through but Sutton United played their part in a thriller. East London overcame South West London thanks to Mitch Brundle’s extra time winner, it ended 3-2 to the Daggers.

Bath City got the job done, beating Sholing 2-0 at Twerton Park.

Chester will face Royston Town next after they survived a scare to beat Hednesford 2-1. Reliable Akwasi Asante got what turned out to be the winner.

Leamington produced probably their best display of the season as the thumped AFC Telford 5-0 at the New Bucks Head.

Josh Marsh’s hat-trick inspired the Brakes to their best away win in over three years.

Southport survived against South Shields, Liam Watson’s side comfortable 3-1 winners against the dangerous former FA Vase winners.

Hampton face an exciting trip to Yeovil in the New Year as they bettered Tonbridge 2-0 at the Beveree.

There was only one League game played, that came in the National League South as St Albans showed spirit to claim a point in a 3-3 draw at Oxford City.
