Magnificent Lincoln Run Comes to an End

Vanarama National League Lincoln City`s fantastic Emirates FA Cup adventure finally came to an end, perhaps appropriately, at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday tea-time as Premier League Arsenal finally showed their class in the second half.

The Imps, who beat the Gunners` league rivals Burnley to reach the Quarter-Finals to become the first side outside of the Football League to reach this far in the modern history of the competition, gave a great account of themselves throughout, but especially in the opening 45 minutes.

The Imps` keeper Paul Farman knew he`d be in for a busy evening and he did well to save from Theo Walcott in the 14th minute.

And on the half-hour mark, Lincoln had an opportunity to take a shock lead when big Matt Rhead played in Nathan Arnold, who advanced into the area, cut inside Laurent Koscielny and forced Petr Cech to turn the ball behind for a corner.

The away team's resistance was finally broken in injury-time at the end of the first half when Kieran Gibbs teed up Walcott just inside the box and the forward's deflected shot beat Farman.

As expected, Arsenal dominated the second half and made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute when Hector Bellerin played a neat one-two with Alexis Sanchez before cutting the ball back for Olivier Giroud, who stroked the ball home past Farman.

Lincoln skipper Luke Waterfall inadvertently guided a Gibbs pass into the back of his own net just before the hour-mark to make it 3-0.

Sanchez then curled home a lovely fourth in the 72nd minute after skipping past Alex Woodyard, and the former Barcelona star had a hand in the Gunners making it a nap hand in the 75th minute, when his trickery found Aaron Ramsey at the far post.

So the wonderful run is over for Danny Cowley and his side, who now have the opportunity to do the `double` of National League and Buildbase FA Trophy.

Lincoln now have to lift themselves to play York City in the Trophy Semi-Final first leg at Bootham Crescent on Tuesday.
