The Buildbase FA Trophy Semi-Final between Vanarama National League rivals Macclesfield Town and Tranmere Rovers is finely balanced after the first leg ended 1-1 at the Moss Rose on Saturday.

Tranmere are looking for a `double` of promotion back to the Football League and a first ever visit to Wembley for a Trophy final and are favourites now heading into their home leg next weekend.

And they had a massive boost when they were awarded a penalty in the opening couple of minutes after a foul on Jeff Hughes in the box.

He dusted himself down to slot the spot-kick in off the inside each post as Rovers` fans in the crowd held their breath.

Despite the early lead, and the fact that Tranmere are chasing a promotion spot in the league, it was the Silkmen who bossed large parts of the game from then on.

They came close to equalising when Tranmere`s veteran defender Steve McNulty headed against his own crossbar as the Silkmen put over a several crosses lookin to unsettle the visitors` defence.

The second half was a scrappy affair with neither team keeping hold of the ball for long periods.

But Macclesfield got themselves back on level terms 9 minutes into the second half when a long ball bounced around the area and eventually fell to Ollie Norburn, who tucked the ball past Scott Davies from 12 yards.

Connor Jennings fired wide from 25 yards with Macclesfield dominating the possession for the final few minutes but unable to create any clear-cut chances on Davies' goal.
